Life is full of contradictions....and unfortunately for those who have lived in America's drug infested streets, the raw unapologetic lyrics Deniro spits in Big Tookie are the side that politically correct college educated folks.....don't want to hear. Too brash, too hood, too real for those who haven’t seen this side of life and it makes you feel dirty or unconnected...but rest assure he doesn't hold back shit, doesn't wrap this lifestyle up in a pretty bow nor does he deny it … he is enraged by it, trapped by it....falling prey to the side that has robbed him of family members, opportunities and the security that most of us take for granted…. This upbringing doesn’t just wash away, and street bravado is the battle cry for those trying to stay alive, literally. So on the surface this may look like another rap song about drugs, pussy …. Perpetuating a stereotype that frightens society…but if you listen to the very end of the song…and watch the video, Deniro looks straight into the camera and says this:
“Here’s the distinction between animalism and humanity….an animal like a goat has no sense of his impending death….although his brother goat is getting slaughtered….he goes and grazes on the green grass offered to him as he stands peacefully waited to be slaughtered himself….on the other hand a man see his fellow man being slaughtered by his enemy he has no choice but to fight and save his brothers life or to fight and save his own.”
Maybe all of those who stopped listening to the song because of it’s crude language about pussy and murder should have dug a little deeper and realized that this song is about a fatalistic view of a very likely scenario that many of us, fortunately we will never know.
